Tohru Honda is a cheerful 16 year old girl who has just lost her mother
in a car accident. Not wanting to burden anyone, she buys a tent and begins
to live in a forest. But, it turns out that the land Tohru is living on
belongs to the Sohma family. This mysterious family (all males) quickly
invites Tohru to stay in their house in exchange for cooking and cleaning.
One of the Sohma's, Yuki, is the most popular boy at Tohru's high school.
He is swooned by girls constantly and is even referred to as the "prince"
of the school. His cousins Shigure and Kyo make up the rest of the household.
Everything's going well until she discovers the Sohma family's greatest
secret: when hugged by members of the opposite sex, they each turn into
their Chinese Zodiac animal!
Kyou is cursed by the cat, Yuki by the spirit of the mouse and Shigure is
the dog.
Tohru promises not to tell a soul but generally, when the secret is accidently
revealed Hatori (one of the cursed member of the family), has the possibility
to erase memory.
Accordingly, members of the family who are cursed are sequestered from the
outside world as much as possible. The one who decide how they live is Akito,
the head of the family. He takes all the decisions regarding the curse and
keep the juunishi under his control.
By chance, he lets Tohru keep her memory and even allows her to live with
Kyo, Yuki and Shigure. However, we suppose there is an ulterior motive for
allowing this to happen.

As the story goes on, Thoru gets to know more about the juunishi and the terrible past they try to hide. Little by little, she'll heal their pain despite Akito's increasing anger and show them that life is worth living.
The chinese legend related to the curse is that a long time ago, God invited all the animals to the banquet, and the first twelve to come would be granted members of the Zodiac. The rat heard the news before the cat, and told the cat that the party was the day after the actual date. So, the rat came to the banquet first riding on the back of the ox, and the cat was banished from the Zodiac for not coming.
